Pink Smog

Attention all Weetzie Bat fans! If Pink Smog somehow slipped your radar, you must pick up this book right now. See how it all began--how an awkward, unpopular middle school girl named Lousie found her power and transformed herself into Weetzie Bat. And if you don't know the Weetzie Bat books, this is a good place to start.

Set in beautiful (and poisonous L.A.) Weetzie loves her life until the father she adores abruptly abandons the family, leaving Weetzie adrift. Suddenly Weetzie's taking care of her mother instead of the other way around. At the same time, the popular girls at school have made Weetzie their target. And some very strange people, who seem wicked and witchy, have moved into Weetzie's apartment complex. The mother of the family is somehow connected to Weetzie's missing dad, the daughter is practising some kind of voodoo . . . but the son, a gorgeous golden boy, seems to be Weetzie's one and only savior. Several times he intervenes in sticky situations for Weetzie. But who is he and how is he connected to her dad too? And if he's not around, will Weetzie learn to depend on herself and find her own strength? (Of course, she will! But it's still fun to read the journey.)

As usual, FLB's writing is beautiful and magical. All of the Weetzie books, or any of FLB's books, really, make you yearn for L.A. Think you don't like L.A.? You might change your mind after seeing it through Weetzie's eyes. These are the books in the Weetzie series. You can read them individually or in the compilation, Dangerous Angels.
